Porcelain Fixed Bridges

A dental bridge is a fixed (non-removable) appliance that can be a convenient way to restore your smile when you have one or more missing teeth. The bridge gets its name because it literally “bridges the gap” between the remaining teeth.

There are several types of bridges. A Porcelain Fixed Bridges is the most popular because they resemble the look and feel or your teeth. This type of bridge consists of two porcelain dental crowns that go over two anchoring teeth (abutment teeth) and are attached to pontics (artificial teeth), filling the gap created by one or more missing teeth.

Dental bridges are highly durable and with proper care can last more than ten years; however, they may need repair or replacement due to normal wear.

A fixed bridge will:

  • Restore your smile by filling the gap left by missing teeth
  • Support the facial tissues for a youthful look
  • Help prevent the remaining teeth from shifting
  • Help restore the ability to chew and speak naturally
  • Remain in place as you eat, speak and sleep—just like natural teeth

Getting a bridge usually requires two or more visits. While the teeth are numb, the two anchoring teeth are prepared by removing a portion of enamel to allow for a crown. Next, a highly accurate impression is made which will be sent to a dental laboratory where the bridge will be fabricated. In addition, a temporary bridge will be made and worn for several weeks until your next dental appointment.

At the second visit, your permanent bridge will be carefully checked, adjusted, and cemented to achieve a proper fit. Occasionally we may only temporarily cement the bridge, allowing your teeth and tissue time to get used to the new bridge. The new bridge will be permanently cemented at a later time.

Feel free to contact us if you have any questions about fixed porcelain bridges or to schedule a smile consultation with one of our doctors.
